Popping Patterns is now available in Games & Activities, adding colourful movement and bold visual change to the On/Off milestone within the Cause & Effect learning objective.
Popping Patterns has joined the On/Off milestone in Games & Activities, giving learners a new abstract visual experience through which to explore early cause and effect. One activation switches a pattern on, filling the screen with colour and movement. A second activation switches it off again. When the learner restarts, another pattern can appear, creating a fresh reason to watch and interact.
The activity uses a simple, consistent interaction so the result of each activation is easy to see. Learners can explore the sequence of starting, watching and stopping without needing to choose between several objects or target a small area. Over repeated turns, this can help learners recognise that their action changes what happens on screen. It can also support anticipation and purposeful activation as they begin to understand what their next action will do. The clear visual contrast between the inactive silhouette and the active pattern can be especially useful for learners who are motivated by colour, movement and abstract visual effects.
Popping Patterns creates natural opportunities for an adult to model words and concepts alongside the activity. You could say ‘on’ when the pattern begins, ‘off’ when it stops and ‘again’ before the learner restarts it. Try leaving a short pause after each activation. This gives the learner time to notice the change and decide whether they want to act again. Watch for small signs of anticipation, such as looking towards the screen or preparing to activate their switch.
Popping Patterns supports touch, mouse, one switch and eye gaze access. Because an activation anywhere on the game screen controls the event, the learner can focus on the On/Off relationship rather than precise targeting. Like the other activities in the milestone, Popping Patterns includes attention prompts to help re-engage a learner after a pause.
Popping Patterns is the fifth activity within the new On/Off milestone, joining Musical Musicians, Surprise Silhouettes, Vrooming Vehicles and Mighty Monsters. Each activity uses the same clear interaction while offering different characters, sounds and visual experiences. This allows learners to practise an important cause and effect skill through the content that interests them most.
