Two new Explore activities have just been added to Sensory Space, giving learners more chances to move, activate and discover what happens next through playful, rewarding interaction.
Beat Pad is a vibrant musical grid that invites learners to explore the screen and hear instant feedback. Each colour plays a different sound, the notes get higher in pitch as you move up the buttons to the right. There’s also fun sound effects to mix things up. It’s a lovely way to encourage curiosity and repetition, because every movement brings a clear response that feels motivating and meaningful.
Slime is a calm, glossy sensory experience where gentle interaction stretches and shifts the slime on screen while colours softly swirl and blend together. Learners can also try gathering all the slime into one blob or see what colour appears when everything mixes together. It’s a great option for building cause and effect in a soothing way, while supporting attention and exploration at the learner’s own pace.
Explore activities are designed to help learners learn through discovery. As they activate and or move their access method, the animations respond, helping them connect what they do with what they see and hear. Over time, that steady feedback can build confidence, curiosity, and a stronger understanding of cause and effect.
Start by giving learners time to freely explore without any pressure to do it “right”. If you want to add a gentle focus, try a simple goal like finding a favourite sound in Beat Pad or making the slime bigger in Slime. These activities also work really well alongside communication, so you can model words like more, again, stop, and my turn as you play together.
One of the best things about Sensory Space is how easy it is to tailor each session. You can change colours and choose music that fits the learner and the moment, whether you are aiming for calm and soothing or bright and energising.
Sensory Space activities are grouped into categories that support learners at different stages of development through sensory rich, interactive experiences. Each category is designed to build key skills like attention, anticipation, early decision making, and independent discovery. As learners explore cause and effect in different ways, from press and hold to movement based interaction, they can build confidence, curiosity, and greater control over their learning journey.
Sensory Space is a collection of online sensory activities designed for learners with special educational needs. Activities are organised into five categories, Control, Engage, Interact, Switch and Explore, and are built to work with a range of access methods so every learner can take part with confidence.
